On the Buses

Saturday, December 24th, 2011

Some new images of the London routemaster bus redesign have just been released. The new version of the iconic bus features two staircases and three doors – enabling travellers to once again hop on and off whenever they want. Designed by Thomas Heatherwick, the new bus will also be fuel efficient, saving 15% more energy than the existing hybrid buses and 40% more than the conventional diesel versions. Prototype buses will start appearing on the 38 route soon.

Magnetism

Saturday, July 9th, 2011
Just arrived in ibiza for a long overdue vacation. People say that they experience a huge pull to this island. I certainly do. There may be a true scientific fact that substantiates this feeling. Located off the Southwest coast of IBIZA lies the mysterious rock island ES VEDRA, almost 400 m in height, made of limestone and surrounded by many myths and legend.
Due to extremely high concentrations of metals and minerals the rock creates a highly magnetic field, resulting in it being the 13th most magnetic spot’ on the globe, that may disturb compasses in the surrounding area and also may influence more sensitive individuals. The Ibizians keep one strong myth very much alive by spreading ’the secret story’ of ’ATLANTIS’, without including specific details of its whereabouts.
It is to be found in CALA D’HORT’S bay area, directly opposite ES VEDRA but only to be reached by boat or through a difficult climbing trip but… since there are NO maps available to point out directions and there are no charter boats that will bring you……..you must be persistent.
ATLANTIS has a natural cave with a painted image of GOD SHIVA, proclaimed protector to the cave temple. Many visitors to the island spend many hours unfruitfully searching for ATLANTIS and that is precisely the magic of it.
The ones that do find this mystical spot after a blood-curdling descend, experience a peaceful and spiritually inspiring spot, and they will be confronted with various pieces of art left by previous visitors.

Empire State of mind

Monday, May 16th, 2011

Another NY trip draws to an eventful end. The Empire State building is something that I have always loved. On my first trip to NYC, my cousin took me here as well as the WTC. I was so full of awe of the sheer scale of the place. It was 1986, and the city seemed so amazing and crazy.

This building has followed me around over the last few years. My old apartment had the view of the south facing side of the building. The building lights change colour according to anniversaries / commemorations or sponsorships. Tonight’s colours celebrate the Bronx Tourism Council’s 40th anniversary. The building’s website indicates what the colours represent on any one night. www.esbnyc.com/current_events_tower_lights.asp

Graphic rice

Monday, April 11th, 2011

In Inakadate, a small Northern town in Japan, you can find Samurai warriors and Napoleonic horsemen decorating the Rice fields. They are created with different varieties of coloured rice, with the images taking shape as the rice shoots come up. The complex designs are worked out with the aid of computer imaging and then planted in May by hundreds of volunteers.

Early morning Tokyo

On the limousine bus back to Narita. One last Cherry Blossom.

Last night in Tokyo

Saturday, April 9th, 2011

Last view of cherry blossoms for another year. Have been so lucky that I have made it for the last three years. Sadly no cherry blossom parties this week, as everyone is in a sombre mood. Another short tremor tonight at 6.30pm. All predicting a big one on tuesday of next week. Hence, alot of stores empty of water. Mothers with children under 2, can ask for double rations of water on production of the child’s birth certificate. One would never have predicted that Tokyo would become like this. On the basis of the few days I have spent here, all will be ok, as the people have really grouped together to help each other.

Parking Seoul Style

Sunday, October 31st, 2010

After working for several days in Seoul, myself and long time film collaborator, Steve Langmanis from Digital Pro had a few hours off to look around. We saw these car park attendants ushering cars into a prestigious shopping centre and thought they were too good not to share with others. The ‘Jacksonesque’ hand gestures certainly would be welcome at any NCP in london. Many thanks to Steve for creating this little film.

On the same Seoul street, an enticing display for noodles.

Seoul food

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

With a few hours off in Seoul, we came across some ingenious solutions to everyday problems we all face. When buying fish and chips, and wanting to eat on the go, what do you do? Well in Seoul, they have decided to stick the chips to the fish.

Tokyo Taxi Tops

Friday, October 15th, 2010

In Tokyo this week shooting some campaigns and films. Everything about this city is wonderful, even down to their taxis. Each one is part of an individually owned company. With that, they all have unique logos and signage. Added to the fact that the drivers wear white gloves and the passenger door automatically opens and closes for you, you cannot beat this kind of service.

Sunshine

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

We have just completed a swimwear shoot in Ibiza, one of my favourite places. We shot on a variety of beaches, including one called Sa Caleta, which has the best seafood restaurant. Their speciality is Squid Ink risotto. A must.

All did not go according to plan. Half way to Formentera, a mini tornado appeared. The joy of location shoots…
